What We Invest In

Stage

We are a seed and early-stage venture capital fund. As such, we make our initial investment into a start-up at the Seed or Series A stage. What does this mean? This means we invest in start-ups looking for their first institutional money as well as those companies that are early and mid stage.

Sectors of Interest

We invest in dermatology. In particular, we invest in (alphabetically): Biotech, Diagnostics, Internet, Healthcare IT & Services, Material Science, Mobile, Medical Device, and Software. We have a particular interest in cancer related sectors, early diagnosis and treatment alternatives to surgery, cosmetic surgery, non invasive approaches, and technology that disrupts the common everyday burdens faced by physician and patient.

Size

We prefer to invest in capital efficient businesses and will typically invest $100k to $2M over the life of the company in which we invest. We will, and have done, investments less than $100K when doing so is appropriate.

Knowledge as Capital, About Us

Founded by a team of successful entrepreneur-investors to bridge their expertise in product commercialization with entrepreneurs seeking to realize significant value from proven technologies. Similar to an angel or venture capital investor, we make an investment in the selected portfolio company. However, our investment also includes direct involvement by the partners, as well as personal capital.

Whereas a typical angel or venture capital investor will invest only money and board-level advice while placing the responsibility for strategy and execution on its portfolio company, we will help advise, provide experience, relationships, and will have significant involvement with much of the execution. In our investment model all parties contribute their domain expertise to the joint objective — success for any of our portfolio companies.

How It Works

Step 1.
Determine if your company meets the Dermatology Venture Fund prospective portfolio company profile. Your company must have most of the following:
• A significant commercialization opportunity for the company’s technology/product
• A defensible intellectual property position that is sufficiently developed to be ready to go to market, licensed, or already in the market.

Step 2.
If your company meets the aforementioned profile and you are interested in having Dermatology Venture Fund evaluate your company as a potential portfolio company, fill out our Contact Form.

Step 3.
Your information will be evaluated at the next meeting of the partners to determine our interest level in moving forward. If we are interested, you will be invited to present at the next group meeting for a several hour meeting. We will then conduct due diligence to further clarify and validate the market opportunity, the efficacy of the technology, the capital requirements, and exit strategy. This process may involve contacting industry experts, verifying costs of production, intellectual property diligence, or speaking with potential channel partners.

Step 4.
Once due diligence is completed, we will make a selection of future portfolio companies from among those that passed the previous round. If your company is selected, we will negotiate a detailed term sheet, which will serve as the road map for drafting the formal documents to be executed by both parties.

How We Invest In

Philosophy

We believe we serve two mutually-dependent customer bases: our investors ( “limited partners”) and our entrepreneurial partners. We believe a tremendous opportunity has been created in the earliest stages of private investing by the migration of institutional venture capital funds towards greater fund sizes and larger investments into the later-stages of each company. We work daily to prove that our skill sets are particularly well suited to investing in such seed and early-stage start-ups in the technology and life science sectors. We believe we can focus such new companies’ progress and accelerate their achievement of definitive milestones as well as prepare them for follow-on investments in the later-stages by combining our technical / operational expertise and capital.

Investment Criteria

We are looking for capital efficient start-ups with a differentiated and sustainable competitive advantage targeting large, addressable and growing markets with clear operational and financial objectives based on early milestones/proofs of concept that are value-adding and reduce risk. Our ideal management teams (however incomplete at the time of the investment!) will be able and willing to work closely with us to develop and grow their businesses.

Investment Process

If you think you have an opportunity that fits our model and philosophy, just contact the appropriate Managing Director directly via e-mail with a short description of what it is you are up to and we can go from there. If there is interest after the initial information has been provided, we will contact you to arrange a call or meeting If there is continued mutual interest in working together after our initial call/meeting, we will discuss the next steps. We take board seats on all the companies we invest in and actively work to help the companies grow their respective businesses.
